To get started on the road to health, you must arm yourself with all the information you can. One of the most valuable resources in your toolbox is the MTHFRsupport.com Variant Report powered by the 23andMe.com raw data. This report is constantly growing and currently reports over 250 variants (SNPs) related to your health. These variants are grouped and color-coded by category as well as helpful links to research information on external websites.
If you are not familiar with 23andMe.com, you need to be! Here is a little background… 23andMe is a DNA analysis service providing information and tools for individuals to learn about and explore their DNA. The company was founded in 2006 after they recognized the need for a way to organize and study genetic data, the possibility for individual consumers to use the information and the need for expertise to interpret the results.
They use the Illumina OmniExpress Plus Genotyping BeadChip. In addition to the variants already included on the chip by Illumina, they’ve included their own, customized set of variants relating to conditions and traits that are interesting. Technical information on the performance of the chip can be found on Illumina’s website. All of the laboratory testing for 23andMe is done in a CLIA-certified laboratory.
23andMe provides valuable information such as:
- Reports on 240+ health conditions and traits
- Testing for 40+ inherited conditions
- Discover your ancestry composition
- Updates on your DNA as science advances
But one of the most powerful features of 23andMe.com is access to your Raw Data. They report your genetic information on approximately one million variants. This is where we come into the picture. MTHFR Support in conjunction with several leading healthcare practitioners in the nutrigenomics field has developed a Variant Report which will let you know which variants or SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) you might have that could possibly impact your health.
So how do you get started? It all begins with 23andMe.com. Visit 23andMe to order your test kit. Once you have completed your test and returned it to 23andMe, you will have to wait for your results to be completed. This can take up to 10 weeks or more depending on volume.
Once 23andMe has notified you that your test results are in, you will need to download your raw data from 23andMe.com. To make things easy for you, we have created a step-by-step tutorial on how to download this file. You can find that tutorial here.
With your raw data downloaded, you will want to visit our Reports and Consults page. Here you will start the process of uploading your data to create your MTHFR Support Variant Report.
Please note: Once you have generated your report, you are highly encouraged to work with a knowledgeable healthcare professional for medical advice. Our goal here is to empower you to learn more about your genetics and in turn help you to be your own healthcare advocate. If your current practitioner is not versed in genetic variants, we have a list of recommended practitioners that you can contact. Many of them can work remotely and in conjunction with your doctor. The MTHFRsupport.com practitioners have been personally interviewed by Sterling Hill, the founder of MTHFRsupport.com, to ensure they have the scope of knowledge needed to help this community of people.
Good luck in your journey of health!
